SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team topped Hofstra, 3-2 (25-12, 25-18, 22-25, 25-27, 15-10), to kick-off day two of the SHU Invitational. The Pirates (6-8) will play Yale at 6:30 p.m. tonight to determine first place.
Sophomore Rachael Thornquist (Cyrstal Lake, Ill.) had a strong match with 15 kills and a career-best 25 digs. Both of the Hall's setters also had double-doubles with Megan Murison (Woodridge, Ill.) handing out 23 assists and 10 digs, while Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) notched 32 assists and 10 digs.
There was little doubt in set one, with the Pirates surging to an early 8-3 lead and rolling to a 25-12 win.
Seton Hall quickly took control in the second, taking a 12-6 edge after a Melissa Bellomy (Arlington, Texas) spike. Thornquist extended the lead to 19-11, but the Pride (2-11) started to build some momentum, and cut the deficit to 21-18. However, the Pirates finished the set by scoring four straight to take a 2-0 lead in the contest.
After a back-and-forth beginning to the third, Hofstra finally pulled away by taking a 21-18 lead. Bellomy and Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) teamed up for a block to pull SHU within a point, but the Pride held on to force another frame.
Hofstra continued its roll in the fourth set and jumped out to an 11-5 lead. The Pirates still trailed 18-14, but rattled off four consecutive scores to knot things up. The Pride answered with a 5-1 spurt to regain a comfortable, 23-19, margin before another tear by SHU. A bad set by Hofstra capped a 6-0 run, and put the Pirates in position to take the match, 24-23. The teams traded the next three scores until back-to-back Seton Hall miscues helped the Pride tie the match, 2-2.
The deciding set was another close affair early on, but DeVries scored on three kills to spark a 5-0 rally, giving the Pirates a 10-6 lead. Hofstra pulled within three, but that was the closest they came, and SHU held on to take the match.
