NEWARK, Del. - The Seton Hall volleyball team dropped a tough, 3-2 (24-26, 25-7, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13), decision at Delaware on Wednesday. Senior Allie Matters (North Tonowanda, N.Y.) had a match-high 26 digs, and now has the longest double-figure dig streak in the country at 53 straight contests.
Junior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had a strong performance with 18 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) posted 17 kills, and freshman Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) had a double-double with 33 assists and 13 digs.
Set one was a close contest that saw SHU (6-10) trail by a small margin most of the way. Thornquist finally tied things up, 22-22, with a kill and a Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) block put the Pirates in position to serve for the set win. The Blue Hens (6-5) recorded the next point, but a service error gave Seton Hall the lead back, and Wrobel and Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) rejected an attack by Kim Stewart to complete the come-from-behind win.
Delaware blitzed the Hall with a 14-2 run to start the second, and rolled to an easy, 25-7, win to tie the match.
The third set was much more competitive, but SHU were still playing from behind for much of the frame. The Blue Hens began to pull away late, taking a 19-14 lead, but the Pirates began to surge. Osmun cut the deficit to two points, and later a 5-0 run put Seton Hall on top, 22-21. Consecutive kills by Osmun and Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) extended the lead to 24-22, and another clutch spike from Osmun sealed another comeback triumph.
In the fourth, Delaware continued to hold a slight edge over the Hall the entire set. The Blue Hens pushed the advantage to 22-17, and that was enough cushion to force the deciding set.
Seton Hall went ahead, 7-5, to start the fifth set, but Delaware knotted the score twice and took a 9-8 lead. With the score, 12-10, in favor of the Blue Hens, the Pirates netted two straight. However, Delaware answered with two straight and finished the match with a Katie Dennehy kill.
The Hall opens up BIG EAST play on Saturday, September 26 against Georgetown in Walsh Gymnasium.
