SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) and sophomore Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) turned in career days as the Seton Hall volleyball team rolled past West Virginia on Saturday, 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16). The Pirates (7-11, 2-1) are back in action tomorrow as they host Pittsburgh at noon.
Matusiak rang up a career-high 23 kills to go along with 12 digs, while Trudeau set a personal-best with 57 assists while tying her career-high of 18 digs. Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) came up with 15 kills, 16 digs and a career-best five blocks, and sophomore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 12 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) led all players with 18 digs.
Serinna Russo paced the Mountaineers (11-7, 1-2) with 16 kills.
The Pirates started fast in set one, taking a 9-4 lead after kills by Matusiak and sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.). The Hall took its largest lead of the set when Matusiak made it 16-9, and she later closed the set with a point to give the home team a 25-19 win and a 1-0 lead.
West Virginia led 11-9 in set two before Seton Hall ripped off a 9-3 run to take command. Hugeback and Matusiak each registered a pair of kills down the stretch as the Pirates won set two going away, 25-19.
After giving up set three, the Hall came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth. It was 4-0 behind the serve of Trudeau, and three kills from Matusiak highlighted an 8-0 spurt that made it 13-2 in favor of the Pirates. It was academic from there on as Seton Hall won its second straight BIG EAST match.
The Pirates hit .276 on the day while holding the Mountaineers to a .110 mark. Seton Hall outdug West Virginia, the nation's leader entering the week, by an 83-63 margin.
DeVries finished the day with 11 kills, while junior Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) was credited with eight blocks.
Prior to the match, Osmun was honored for breaking the school record for kills in the Pirates' last outing at Louisville.
