SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - A wild fifth set ended with three straight points for Pittsburgh as the Panthers (8-11, 3-1) survived against the Seton Hall volleyball team on Sunday, 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 20-25, 25-19, 19-17). The Pirates (7-12, 2-2) are back in action on Thursday at NJIT.
Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led all players with 21 kills, pushing her over the 1,400-mark for her career. A pair of sophomores set career-highs, as Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) totaled 18 kills and 18 digs, and Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) notched 66 assists.
Freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) came up with a game-high 29 digs, while junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) added 14 kills and 19 digs. Imani Harper led Pittsburgh with 19 kills.
The Pirates won sets two and three, but could not close out the Panthers in fourth. A 10-4 run to close kept Pitt alive and pushed the match to a fifth frame.
It was 8-5 in favor of the Panthers when Seton Hall strung together five straight points, capped off by two kills from Hugeback, to take a two-point lead. Pittsburgh responded with the next five points for a 13-10 edge, and a point from Amy Town made it 14-11. The Pirates fought off three straight match points to even the score, and they would survive two more occasions as things knotted up at 16. Osmun put the Hall ahead by one with a kill, but the last spurt of the day went to the Panthers, as they ran off three unanswered to claim the victory.
Seton Hall hit .195 on the day, while Pittsburgh managed a .225 mark. The Pirates outdug the Panthers, 91-84.
