SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall head volleyball coach Kris Zeiter has announced the signings of three student-athletes to national letters of intent, including All-American setter Shelbey Manthorpe of Merion Mercy Academy in Merion Station, Pa.
Stacey Manthorpe, the twin sister of Shelbey, and Olivia Desormey of St. Charles East High School in St. Charles, Ill. have also signed on to join the program in the fall of 2011.
Shelbey Manthorpe was named a Prep Volleyball Senior Ace in 2010, a year after making the same publication's list of high school All-Americans and top 35 juniors. This past summer, she earned All-America honors at the Junior Olympics National Championship in Reno, Nev. and the AAU Girls' Junior National Volleyball Championships in Orlando, Fla while playing for Synergy Volleyball Club. As a junior in 2009, the six-foot Manthorpe was named All-State, All-District and All-Main Line, as well as team and PIAA AA state championship most valuable player. In 2008, she also picked up All-State, All-District and All-Main Line honors while making the Prep Volleyball top 25 sophomores list. Manthorpe also garnered All-America recognition at the 2009 AAU National Championships and the 2008 Junior Olympics.
"I believe Shelbey is one of the top setters in her class," said Zeiter. "She has guided her club team to runner up finishes at the two biggest tournaments of the summer and was chosen an All-American at each event. Shelbey is a tough-minded and aggressive setter who plays very physical at the net, and she will challenge to run our offense right away. As a lefty, she can also attack at the BIG EAST level, so we will see how to best have her contribute, but it is an issue that I very much look forward to working out."
Stacey Manthorpe, also six-feet tall, has been a four-year starter at Merion Mercy Academy, playing middle blocker and right-side hitter. Also a member of the Synergy Volleyball club, she made the 2008 and 2009 PIAA AA state championship All-Tournament Teams. As a junior, she was named All-State, All-District and All-Main Line, while also picking up All-State and All-District honors as freshman and sophomore. Also in 2007, she was named to Prep Volleyball's top 15 freshmen. She and her sister are both two-year captains at Merion Mercy.
""Stacey is a jack of all trades on the volleyball court," Zeiter said. "She can play every front row position and has even played libero for her club team when needed. I believe Stacey is going to be a very good right side or outside hitter at this level and that she will challenge for significant playing time immediately. She is a proven winner on the club and high school levels and will provide a winning attitude from the day she arrives on campus."
Desormey, a middle blocker, is a four-year member of the varsity team at St. Charles East, earning All-Conference recognition her final three seasons. She helped her team to the 4A state championship as a sophomore after a third-place finish in her freshman campaign. In her four years, the six-foot-one Desormey won four 4A regional championships, three 4A sectional championships and two 4A supersectional championships. She has been a member of Club Fusion since 2008.
"Add Olivia to our long list of Chicago-area recruits," said Zeiter. "She is an athletic middle blocker who will challenge for playing time right away, and she can also play the right side. Olivia has a very good arm and will be able to score points at the BIG EAST level, and after playing on some top level club teams she will be prepared to contribute immediately."
