SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall volleyball team took a huge step towards clinching a berth in the BIG EAST Championship with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 26-24) win over Syracuse on Saturday. The Pirates (12-15, 6-5) host Marquette tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
Freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) was all over the court for the Hall on her way to 30 digs. Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) tied for game-high honors with 19 kills each, while sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) turned in a terrific performance with 12 kills and a .667 attack percentage.
Sophmore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs, as did her classmate Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) with 59 assists and 11 digs. Hayley Todd paced the Orange (22-7, 4-7) with 15 kills.
Leading in 10-8 in set one, the Hall got kills from DeVries and Matusiak as part of a 5-0 run to take command. An ace by Osmun later made it 20-14, and the serve of senior Megan Murison (Woodridge, Ill.) helped the Pirates close out the 25-17 victory.
With a 9-7 lead in the second set, Seton Hall put together a 7-1 run to once again seize control. Syracuse got no closer than four the rest of the way, and Hugeback closed things out with a kill for another 25-17 win.
Set three went back and forth the entire way, and the score was knotted at 21 late before a 4-1 spurt by the Orange kept them alive.
After leading by five on several occasions in set four, the Hall let Syracuse go on a 10-3 run that put the Orange in front, 23-21. Osmun came up with consecutive kills to tie it, but a service error on Matusiak made it set-point for Syracuse. Osmun registered another point to knot it at 24, and an error by Todd was followed by a kill from Hugeback that made it 26-24 and sealed the match for Seton Hall.
The Pirates finished the day hitting .312 while holding the Orange to a ,195 mark. The Hall claimed a 79-61 edge in digs.
