WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Wisconsin used its great size to overcome the Seton Hall volleyball team on Saturday afternoon at the Tribe Invitational, 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-17). The Pirates stand at 1-2 after their opening weekend, while the Badgers improved to 3-0.
Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) led the Hall with 12 kills, while sophomore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 10. Freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) had 14 digs for the Pirates, while sophomore Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) handed out 27 assists.
Elise Walch led all players with 19 kills for Wisconsin, which is receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 Poll.
The Pirates led early in set one, using several service errors on the Badgers to go up 6-5. Wisconsin answered with a 10-1 run behind the strong jump serve of Allison Wack, who finished the day with five aces. The Badgers cruised the rest of the way to a 25-16 set victory.
Set two was a back-and-forth affair from the start, and the Pirates led 10-8 after an attack error on Walch. Kills by Osmun and Hugeback, followed by an Osmun ace, pushed the lead to 15-11. Seton Hall stayed ahead, and it was 20-18 after Trudeau came up with a kill from the setter spot. The Badgers rallied for a 24-23 lead, but Hugeback and Osmun responded with points to give the Pirates a one-point edge. Wisconsin recovered, however, picking up three straight points to take command of the match.
The Hall led set three 9-8 after a Hugeback kill, but Wisconsin managed to regroup behind Walch to close out the Pirates.
The Badgers finished the day with a .408 hitting percentage and 50 kills.
Seton Hall returns to action next Friday against top-ranked Penn State, the three-time defending national champion. The Pirates will also face VCU and Colgate at the Nittany Lion Inviational in University Park, Pa.
