BERKELEY, Calif. - Fresno State rallied for a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-17) win over the Seton Hall volleyball team on Friday evening in the first game of the Hilton Garden Inn Classic, hosted by California. The Pirates (3-5) will face the #10 Golden Bears tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. ET before taking on UC Davis at 10:00 p.m. ET.
Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) led the Hall with 14 kills to go along with 10 digs. Sophomores Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) had nine kills each, while senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) tied for team-high honors with 16 digs each.
The Bulldogs (3-3) got off to a quick start in set one, grabbing a 16-11 lead after a kill by Brianna Clarke. A DeVries kill later sparked a 4-0 run for the Pirates that cut it to 18-17, and the game was tied at 19 after a kill by Matusiak. Osmun and junior Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) followed with points, and Matusiak put the Hall on the brink of victory with an attack that made it 24-21. An error by Kelli Parker clinched the opening set for Seton Hall.
Set two began with another Bulldogs' rally, as they took an 11-4 edge on a kill by Marissa Brand. The Pirates gradually chipped away and eventually evened things at 16 after a Hugeback kill and an error by Korrin Wild. But after trading points to 19, Fresno State managed to pull away as Seton Hall hurt itself with errors down the stretch.
The serve of Osmun yielded an early run in set three as the Pirates took a 5-1 lead. Hugeback later gave the Hall a 15-12 lead with a kill, and the Pirates seemed to have momentum on their side. Fresno St. had other ideas, however, as they ran off six unanswered behind the powerful jump serve of Parker to grab an 18-15 edge. Matusiak and Hugeback briefly stemmed the tide with kills, but the Bulldogs closed with a 7-2 spurt to take a 25-19 set victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Seton Hall led early in set four, with a kill from DeVries making it 7-4. Fresno St. again responded, running off six straight, and they held the advantage for the remainder of the set to clinch the win.
Brand paced the Bulldogs with 19 kills.
