SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- A strong collective effort gave the Seton Hall volleyball team a 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-17) victory over Fordham on Tuesday night at Walsh Gymnasium. Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) had a game-high 13 kills to lead the Pirates (5-10), who begin conference play this weekend at Cincinnati.
Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) recorded seven kills, giving her 1,346 for her career and moving her into second place all-time at Seton Hall. She is just 33 back of Jennifer Cheshire's mark of 1,379.
Sophomore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched eight kills, while junior Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) and sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) added six each. Freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) led all players with 14 digs.
The Hall roared out of the gate in set one, using kills by DeVries and Hugeback to take a 3-0 lead. A Matusiak kill later sparked a 4-0 run that made it 10-3, forcing the Rams (8-8) to call timeout. Fordham regrouped to eventually even the score, but a kill and an ace from Matusiak put the Pirates back in front, 19-16. The Rams again fought back to even the set at 22, but Hugeback closed a 3-1 spurt with the decisive kill that gave set one to Seton Hall.
Matusiak stayed hot early in set two, picking up four quick kills as the Pirates grabbed a 9-5 edge. With a 15-13 lead, the Hall went on a 10-1 spurt to take the set, including the last six points behind the jump serve of Warren.
Wrobel and Osmun capped a 6-0 run in set four that put the Pirates in command at 11-4. Osmun came up with her final kill of the game to make it 19-10 and move her into sole possession of second place on the Hall's career kill list. The home team cruised from there, wrapping up set three, 25-17, to take the win.
Seton Hall hit .263 as a team, with Wrobel coming in at a .556 clip. Fordham managed only a .066 mark, committing 24 errors in the match. DeVries also registered six blocks, and the Pirates finished with a 12-2 edge in the category.
