SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Four Pirates registered double-doubles as the Seton Hall volleyball team roared past Princeton, 3-1 (25-13, 26-28, 25-18, 25-18), in its home opener before a boisterous crowd at Walsh Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) rang up 19 kills and 12 digs for the Hall (3-4), while senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had 12 kills and a career-high 22 digs. Sophomore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) posted 11 kills and 14 digs, and her classmate, Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.), had 17 digs, 51 assists and a career-best five aces.
Freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) led the Pirates with 24 digs. C.C. Lobben made a game-high 28 digs for the Tigers (3-1).
Seton Hall dominated set one from the start, taking an 8-4 lead after kills by Hugeback and Matusiak. The advantage reached 16-8 after a block by Hugeback and junior Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.), and Hugeback later capped a 6-0 run with a kill that made it 22-9 in a decisive first set victory.
Princeton raced out to a 24-15 lead in set two before the Hall rallied behind the serve of Trudeau. The setter came up with three aces, and with the help of a trio of kills from Matusiak, the Pirates came all the way back to even the score at 24. The Tigers would regroup, however, winning the set by a 28-26 score to even the match.
The Hall was back in full control in set three, grabbing an 8-1 lead behind the offense of Matusiak. Osmun made 10 digs in the third set alone as the Pirates held Princeton to a -.041 hitting percentage on their way to a 25-18 win.
Set four was more of the same, with Seton Hall going up 7-2 on a kill by Hugeback. Matusiak totaled six kills in the set as the Pirates cruised to another 25-18 win, sealing the match.
Sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was also effective offensively, finishing with nine kills. Wrobel was credited with seven blocks in a dominant defensive effort by the Pirates.
The Hall is back in action on Friday against Fresno State in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic, hosted by California, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Pirates will face the host Bears and UC Davis on Saturday.
