HUNTINGTON VALLEY, PA. - The Seton Hall men's golf team is currently in 18th place following the first round of the 2012 Big 5 Invitational.
With one round remaining, the Pirates are 19 strokes behind the team leader, Sacred Heart. Seton Hall fired a 45-over-par, 325, during a cold and windy first round. Despite being in 18th place, the Pirates have plenty of opportunity to move up in the standings tomorrow. Nine strokes separate places 10 through 18.
Seton Hall is joined by two other BIG EAST competitors. Villanova is currently in third place, one stroke off the team lead, while Connecticut is in fourth place, two strokes behind.
This is the fifth time in the last six years that Seton Hall has competed in this tournament, but the first at Philmont Country Club.
Freshman Cory Wilson (Newton, N.J.) led the Pirates with an 8-over-par, 78, in round one. He is currently tied for 24th among 99 golfers. Wilson is coming off a second place finish at the Binghamton University Fall Invitational.
Sophomore Derrick Kim (New City, N.Y.) is only one stroke behind Wilson, at 9-over-par, but is tied for 41st place overall as 17 golfers are tied for 8-over-par.
Marc Kunesch (Newton, N.J.) is currently at 13-over-par following his 83, while freshman David Cha (Carrollton, Texas) is two strokes behind him at 15-over-par.
Freshman Parker Mann made his collegiate debut, but struggled on the front nine and finished with a 21-over-par, 91.
Fellow freshman Kevin Sanislo (Whippany, N.J.) made the trip and competed as an individual. He fired a first round 84.
The Big 5 Invitational will conclude with 18 final holes on Sunday. A complete recap and result will be available on SHUpirates.com following the day's competition.
