SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University men's soccer team gave up a pair of second half goals to fall to No. 6 Georgetown University, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.
With the loss, the BIG EAST Tournament picture did not get any clearer for SHU. The Pirates entered the day with a three-point lead over Providence College for fifth place in the Blue Division, but the Friars upset third-ranked Connecticut to move into a tie for fifth with Seton Hall heading into the final game of the regular season.
Seton Hall holds the tie breaker over Providence via its 2-1 victory over the Friars back on Oct. 3, but both teams still have a chance to help themselves, with the Pirates meeting Georgetown and Providence matching up with Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 27, the final day of the BIG EAST regular season.
Outside of a series of offense opportunities for Seton Hall nine minutes into the game against Georgetown, the first half did not feature a large number of scoring chances for either team over the first 45 minutes of action.
Seton Hall finished the opening half with a 6-3 edge over the sixth-ranked Hoyas in shot attempts, but neither SHU keeper Michael Kuzan (Union, N.J.) or Georgetown goalie Tomas Gomez were tested more than once, finishing with one save a piece.
The best scoring chance of the half for Seton Hall came nine minutes into the game as sophomore midfielder Konrad Plewa (Maniowy, Poland) played junior forward Max Garcia (Jersey City, N.J.) into the offensive zone on the near side of the field.
Garcia dribbled in and then into the center of the area where he turned to fire a shot, but it was blocked and failed to make it through the Georgetown defense. The rebound bounced out to Plewa outside of the goal box and he quickly loaded up for a shot, but again Georgetown's defenders kept the ball from even reaching Gomez on the back line.
Finally freshman midfielder Eric Lagg (Lafayette, N.J.) was able to send a shot on net, recovering the deflection off Plewa's shot to send a low ball through the defense and on net, but Gomez made a diving save to his right and his defense was able to clear the ball out of the back.
It really was not until the very end of the first half that Seton Hall had another good look at scoring its first goal. A great individual effort by Garcia saw him split a pair of defenders and move into the area from the left side to hammer a shot from 15-yards out over the cross bar.
In the opening moments of the second half Garcia nearly connected again, only this time it took a spectacular save by Gomez to keep the Pirates from taking a lead.
Sophomore Kai Greene (South Orange, N.J.) passed the ball to Garcia in from the right side toward the middle of the area and Garcia bent a beautiful shot in on net toward the upper 90, but Gomez leapt into the air to make the denial and preserve the scoreless tie.
From that point the momentum shifted toward the Hoyas, with Georgetown breaking through for the game's first goal in the 65th minute.
GU forward Melvin Snoh dribbled into the area from the left side and was closely defended by Seton Hall sophomore Mateusz Brela (Kielce, Poland). Brela prevented Snoh from advancing any further on net, but after a long pause Snoh made a centering pass to Ian Christianson, who fired far post to beat Kuzan.
Georgetown had a chance to extend its lead when SHU freshman back Julian Kennedy (Nindorf, Germany) was whistled for a foul and assigned a yellow card just 20-yards out from the net. Steve Neumann took the free kick for the Hoyas, making it through the defensive front, but Kuzan was there waiting to make the stop.
With just over 90 seconds to play Georgetown did net an insurance goal as leading scorer Brandon Allen one-timed a crossing pass from Neumann to record his team-leading 10th goal of the season.
Statistically the offensive chances were even, with shot attempts ending in a 9-9 tie and both teams attempted four corner kicks. A majority of Seton Hall's chances came over the opening 50 minutes of the game, while Georgetown's offense clicked as the game wore on.
Seton Hall (6-10, 2-5) concludes the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27, when it heads down to Washington, D.C., for the second of back-to-back games against the Hoyas. It is the first time the Pirates have played the same team in consecutive matches since 1960.
