GRASONVILLE, MD. - The Seton Hall men's golf team edged Northern Colorado by one stroke in Sunday's playoff to claim the team championship among 22 teams at the 2012 Fireline Towson Invitational.
Northern Colorado counted four pars in the playoff, while Seton Hall logged a birdie and three pars to win the extra session. Senior Troy Spencer (High Point, N.C.) notched the winning birdie for the Pirates and Derrick Kim (New City, N.Y.) impressively saved par after finding a sand trap.
"We played well all tournament long," said Head Coach Clay White. "It's nice to see their hard work pay off with a championship. We've now won two of our last three tournaments and I think we've begun to turn the corner as a team that has a chance to win any tournament we enter."
Kim was the standout performer for the Pirates during round three. The freshman fired a 2-under-par, 70, in the final round to pace Seton Hall to a first place team tie with Northern Colorado, setting up the dramatic playoff.
Seton Hall had a four-stroke lead entering the final round, but Northern Colorado was able to shoot four strokes better than the Pirates today, 289-to-293. For the three-round event, Seton Hall was 7-over-par with a 294-284-293-871.
