Soma was a tremendous spark offensively for Seton Hall in its 2-0 victory over Villanova on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
She entered the game as a substitute in the 27th minute and scored a pair of goals before the end of the opening half. Her first strike of the game came when she finished a header off a great left-side cross from junior Katie Ritter (Hagerstown, Md.) in the 33rd minute; the score counted as her second-game winner of the season and third of her career.
Just 10 seconds before the end of the opening period Soma struck again. Junior Amie Ruhe (Monrovia, Md.) sent a shot on net from 20-yards out that was bobbled by Villanova keeper Kelsey Quinn. With Quinn unable to take control of the shot, Soma was right there to jab in the rebound, giving SHU a 2-0 lead.
With two scores on Sunday afternoon Soma now has four this season and 11 in her career. It also marked the first time in her career she recorded a multi-goal performance.
She leads Seton Hall and is currently tied for seventh in the BIG EAST with four goals in 2012; she is also tied for ninth in the conference in points (9) and points per game (1.0.).
Soma is the fourth Pirate to earn BIG EAST weekly accolades so far this season, with senior Taylor Mims (Miller Place, N.Y.), junior Ashley Clarke (Paramus, N.J.) and freshman D'Yonna Riley (Washingtonville, N.Y.) also receiving conference honors.
Seton Hall (6-4, 1-1) returns to action this weekend for a pair of home contests against conference foes. The Pirates will host No. 24 Marquette on Friday night at Owen T. Carroll Field at 7 p.m., and conclude their three-game home stand against USF on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
