
Volleyball Sweeps LIU, 3-0, in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team snapped LIU's 19-match home winning streak with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20) victory in Brooklyn on Wednesday.The Blackbirds had entered the match with a seven-match win streak and perfect (8-0) at home this season. LIU-Brooklyn also hadn't lost a set in the month of October until tonight.
Seton Hall (8-10) used a solid, all-around team effort to sweep the Blackbirds in straight sets. Junior Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) led the Pirates with eight kills. Sophomore ,b>Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.),/b> had seven kills without an attack error. She also finished with a team-best .500 attack percentage and five blocks.
Leading the defense, senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) finished with a team-best 15 digs to go with four assists. Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a team-best eight blocks.
The Pirates got off to a fast start in set one, scoring the first three points of the set, but LIU rebounded by scoring the next four points to take a 4-3 lead. Seton Hall followed with a 5-0 run and took an 8-4 lead on blocks by Hansen and Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.). LIU fired back and scored five of the next six points to tie the set at nine. From there, the teams tied eight more times. With the set locked at 23, a kill by Grammer put the Pirates in set point and a kill by Sekulova won set one for Seton Hall, 25-23.
LIU never led in set two. An ace by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) capped a 4-1 run by Seton Hall, which took an early 8-4 lead. The Blackbirds fought back to tie the set at 14, but Shelbey Manthorpe's kill put the Pirates back in front for good and they rolled to a 25-20 victory, taking a commanding two-sets-to-none match lead.
Set three was more of the same, as the Pirates never allowed LIU to take the lead. Seton Hall scored the first three points of the set and never relinquished the advantage. With the Pirates leading 10-5, LIU scored four straight, but couldn't tie the score. Seton Hall scored three of the next four points to pad its lead and went on to win set three, 25-20, completing the sweep.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, October 18 when they travel to Georgetown. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
