
Volleyball Edges Georgetown, 3-2, in D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team held on for a five-set victory at Georgetown, 3-2 (25-20, 25-12, 22-25, 17-25, 15-5), on Friday for its first BIG EAST road win of the season.The victory over the Hoyas comes on the heels of getting swept by Georgetown in Walsh Gym less than a week ago.
Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) turned in one of her finest performance of the season. The junior had a double-double with a match-high 17 kills to go with 15 digs. Manthorpe also had a season-high seven blocks and an impressive .271 attack percentage.
Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) recorded a season-high 31 digs.
Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) had a match-high 48 assists, nine digs, four kills and four blocks.
The closest set of the match was the opener. The teams tied 10 times in set one until Seton Hall took control late. With the set tied at 16, the Pirates scored five straight points to take a 21-16 lead. The Hoyas cut the Pirate lead to 21-19, but got no closer and Seton Hall won set one, 25-20.
Seton Hall (9-10, 2-4) dominated set two from the start, scoring the first three points. Georgetown scored the next four points to take a 4-3 lead, but the Pirates went on a 12-1 run and a service ace by Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) gave Seton Hall a commanding 16-5 lead. The Hall never looked back and cruised to a 25-12 set two victory to take a two-sets-to-none match lead.
Hansen finished the match with 13 kills and just one attack error for a team-best .414 attack percentage. She also had six blocks.
Georgetown (8-10, 2-4) struck back in set three. With the score tied at five, the Hoyas scored the next five points to take a 10-5 lead. A kill by Stacey Manthorpe cut the Hoya lead to 13-12, but Georgetown responded with four straight points to boost its lead up to 17-12. A kill by junior Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied the set at 21, but Georgetown scored four of the next five points to win set three, 25-22.
Seton Hall never led in set four as Georgetown jumped out to an early 13-6 lead. The closest the Pirates got the rest of the set was four points as the Hoyas cruised to a 25-17 set four victory to tie the match at two sets apiece.
The Pirates regrouped however, and devastated Georgetown in the fifth and decisive set. Seton Hall scored the first four points of the fifth frame and saw its lead boost to 11-3 on blocks by Rubin and Shelbey Manthorpe. The Pirates didn't let up and won set five, 15-5.
It was Seton Hall's ninth five-set match in 19 matches this season. The Pirates improved to 5-4 in those matches.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it travels to Villanova. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
