WASHINGTON, D.C. - Facing its first ranked opponent of the season the Seton Hall University men's soccer team suffered an 8-0 loss to the No. 11/7 Georgetown Hoyas on an unseasonably hot and humid afternoon at Shaw Field.
Georgetown (8-2-1, 1-0-1) forced the issue from the very beginning and nearly grabbed a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute if not for an aggressive heads up play by Seton Hall starting keeper Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany).
Off a Seton Hall (3-5-2, 0-2-0) corner the Hoyas deftly cleared upfield to Tom Skelly and the resulting run out was a three on one opportunity for the home team. Skelly sent a long diagonal ball out to Brandon Allen on the right side where he was quickly met by Spindler. Once Allen hesitated Spindler hit the deck and wrestled the ball from right under his feet, then fought to cover up and end the threat on what at first appeared to be a sure shot on goal.
Unfortunately for Seton Hall the Georgetown pressure kept coming and in the 11th minute the seventh-ranked Hoyas took a 1-0 lead on an SHU own goal. The scoring play saw Steve Neumann send a cross intended for Skelly from the right side. In the middle of the field Pirate junior defender Jason Wellington (West Palm Beach, Fla.) attempted to deflect the pass but instead redirected it on net.
The next two goals came less than a minute apart. Keegan Rosenberry fielded a long pass down in the right corner and crossed to Neumann who converted at the far post. Just 55 seconds later Seton Hall failed to clear a corner kick and Tyler Rudy settled a high pop up, passing to Alex Muyl on the left side and he blasted a shot on frame from the top of the box.
Seton Hall's best look of the game came just over midway through the opening period, as freshman Samuel Geiler (Offenburg, Germany) attempted a set piece from the right side, nearly 30-yards out from net. He hooked up with junior Kai Greene (South Orange, N.J.) at the far post, only to have his header fly wide.
With two and a half to play in the first Seton Hall engineered another solid scoring opportunity. This time senior John Gurel (Istanbul, Turkey) dribbled into the area from the left side and found redshirt junior Victor Manosalvas (Clifton, N.J.) with a low cross, but his shot was smothered by Tomas Gomez.
Georgetown led 5-0 at the half and put six of its seven first-half shot attempts on net, while Seton Hall finished with six shots, but several were blocked by a sturdy Hoya back line.
Neumann, who scored the 100th point of his career in the opening half, completed a hat trick by converting on a PK in the 59th minute and he finished the game with seven points, also adding an assist. Allen and Skelly rounded out the second half scoring for the Hoyas.
Seton Hall begins a four-match homestand which will include three games against BIG EAST foes when it hosts Villanova University on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m.
