SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team rallied from a large first set deficit to sweep Hofstra, 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-23), in their home opener Tuesday night in Walsh Gym.Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) notched her 13th double-double in 15 matches this season with a match-high 24 assists to go with 11 digs. She also had seven kills, four blocks and a team-best .400 attack percentage in a strong all-around match.
Sophomore Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led the Pirates with eight kills and five blocks.
With the score tied at 11 in set one, Hofstra went on an 8-2 run to take a commanding 19-13 lead. But Seton Hall rallied late and an ace by Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) tied the set at 23. An attack error put Seton Hall into set point at 24-23, but Hofstra answered and tied the set at 24. After the Pirates fended off two Hofstra set points, a Pride attack error gave The Hall the lead at 27-26, and Manthorpe's kill clinched the set for the Pirates, 28-26.
Seton Hall (6-9) jumped on Hofstra at the start of set two and never trailed. A Hofstra ball handling error and three straight attack errors allowed the Pirates to grab an early 11-4 lead. The Pride cut the Seton Hall lead to three points at 13-10, but didn't get closer. Leading 19-15, the Pirates closed set two with a 6-1 run to win, 25-16, and take a two-sets-to-none match advantage.
Set three was significantly closer as the teams totaled 10 ties in the third frame. Leading 21-18, Hofstra scored three straight to tie the set at 21. With the score tied at 23, a kill by Shelbey Manthorpe put Seton Hall in match point, and her sister, Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.), ended the set with a kill to give the Pirates a 25-23 set three victory, and a three-set sweep of Hofstra.
Prior to the start of the match, Warren was honored during a ball ceremony as Seton Hall's new all-time digs leader.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, October 11 when they host Villanova at Walsh Gymnasium. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
