
Volleyball Registers Five-Set Win at DePaul

CHICAGO, ILL. - Both Manthorpe sisters tallied a double-double as the Seton Hall volleyball team won a five-set marathon at DePaul, 3-2 (25-18, 25-17, 15-25, 22-25, 15-8), on Sunday.The victory snaps a four-match losing streak to BIG EAST opponents. The match was the 10th of the season to go five sets for the Pirates. They're 6-4 in those matches.
Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) missed her eighth triple-double of the season by just one dig. She finished with a team-high 40 assists, 11 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) tallied a team-best 14 kills to go with 14 digs.
Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) anchored the Pirates' defense once again with a team-high 27 assists.
Seton Hall (13-14, 4-8) jumped on DePaul from the start in set one, scoring seven of the first eight points. The Blue Demons twice cut the Pirate lead to four points, but didn't get closer as Seton Hall won the first set, 25-18.
Set two was much closer at the start, but the result was ultimately the same. Trailing 5-4, Seton Hall scored five of the next six points to take a 9-6 advantage. Clinging to a one-point lead, the Pirates scored four straight and a kill by Simona Sekulova (Auckland, New Zealand) extended their lead to 14-9. Seton Hall never looked back and won set two, 25-17, to take a commanding two-sets-to-none match advantage.
DePaul (16-10, 2-10) scored the first four points of set three and later extended their lead to 9-2. Leading 10-4, the Blue Demons went on a 7-1 run to take a commanding 17-5 advantage. The Pirates never led in set three, and fell, 25-15, forcing a fourth set.
The Blue Demons maintained a slim lead for most of early portion of set four. Trailing 10-8, Seton Hall scored three straight and a block by Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) gave the Pirates an 11-10 lead. Seton Hall extended its lead to 15-13, but DePaul responded with four straight point to take a 17-15 advantage and never trailed again. The Pirates closed to within one point of DePaul at 23-22, but the Blue Demons scored the final two points to win set four, 25-22, and tie the match at two sets apiece.
DePaul scored the first point of set five, but the Pirates responded with four straight to take a 4-1 lead. Blocks by Stacey Manthorpe and Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) extended Seton Hall's lead to 7-2 in the decisive set, and an ace by Shelbey Manthorpe gave the Pirates a commanding 9-3 lead. A pair of kills by Kayla Kohler (Whitehall, Pa.) put Seton Hall in match point, and a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) was the match winner as Seton Hall took set five, 15-8, and the match, three-sets-to-two.
Schroeder was one of four Pirates that reached double-figures in kills with 10.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, Nov. 15 when it returns to Walsh Gymnasium to host Marquette. Match time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
