SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The Seton Hall tennis team picked up its second win of the spring on Wednesday, cruising past Vanguard University, 8-1, in the second of three matches during a spring break trip to San Diego.
Similar to Tuesday’s showdown with UC-San Diego, the match was played with a nine-point system in accordance with National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) standards. Under this system, a point is awarded for each doubles match rather than a single collective doubles point.
The Pirates jumped out to an early 3-0 lead by coming out on top in all three doubles matches, improving their record to 5-1 in doubles competition over the last two days.
In third doubles, sophomore Anna Guryanova (Moscow, Russia) and Alex Landert (Naples, Fla.) blanked the Vanguard team of Melanie Parker and Ana Taranto, earning their first win together as a team and getting the scoring started for The Hall.
The teams of Rocio Portela (Demetrio Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) and Chloe Sher (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong), and Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua Venezuela) and Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) followed by winning at #1 and #2 respectively for the second-straight day.
All six doubles matches were decided in straight sets, five of which ended in Seton Hall’s favor.
Landert was the first to put a victory in the books, dropping only one game in a dominant 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Michaele Sullivan at #3. The win was the third in dual match play for the freshman from Naples, and her second from the third position.
A match-clinching point from Shoemaker soon followed, as the sophomore, who attended high school in California, powered past Gabrielle Allford, 6-2, 6-0 at #4. Shoemaker now has three wins in her last four matches in the fourth spot in the lineup.
Even with the match in hand, The Pirates continued to control the action, picking up wins in the next three matches to be decided. Cordero shut-out VU’s Parker, 6-0, 6-0 to earn a point in #5 singles. The senior captain has found her form of late, winning two of her last three matches with the lone loss coming in three sets. Maria Rodriguez (Bogota, Colombia) also picked up her second win in her last three, downing Taranto 6-0, 6-2 in the sixth slot. Rodriguez has now scored as an individual in four dual matches to go with 13 combined wins on the season.
Portela picked up the final victory of the day for The Hall, defeating 33rd-ranked Nina Pudar, 6-3, 6-2. Portela now has two dual match victories to her credit and has played at #2 in all nine of her appearances.
In total, the Pirates dropped just 10 games during their five singles victories against the Lions.
SHU will return to the court tomorrow, Thursday, March 7 for their third and final match of the west coast trip. With inclement weather in the forecast, The Pirates’ match with Point Loma Nazarene, the 31st-ranked team in NCAA Division II, has been moved up to 11:00 a.m. eastern time.
