REUNION, FLA. – Junior
Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) fired a 1-undeer-par, 71, to lead the Seton Hall women’s golf team to a fourth place standing following round two of the 2013 BIG EAST Championship at Reunion Resort in Florida. Collectively, the Pirates shot just one stroke worse in round two, a 14-over-par, 302. Seton Hall slipped to fourth place after completing round one in third, but trail Cincinnati by just one stroke. At 27-over-par for the tournament, with a 301-302-603, the Pirates are 24 strokes behind Notre Dame for the team lead. Louisville currently sits in second place one stroke behind Notre Dame. Aided by her tournament-leading second eagle, Cantú’s 71 is her first sub-par round of the 2012-13 year and has her in sixth place among 40 individual golfers. She is currently 2-over-par with a 75-71-146, and trails Emily Haas of Louisville by six strokes for the individual lead. “I think today’s performance really speaks to the depth of our team,” said Head Coach Sara Doell. “After a great round yesterday, Hannah had a very difficult time today. But because of our depth, we’re able to absorb a high number and only shoot one stroke worse as a team. Christina, Ali and Megan really picked up their teammate today.” A day after firing a 1-under-par, 71,
Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) tallied a 13-over-par, 85, in round two. Despite the rough second round, she’s still tied for 26
th overall with a 12-over-par, 71-85-156, with plenty of opportunity to move up in Tuesday’s final round. Sophomore
Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) shot three strokes better in Monday’s second round and is currently tied for 23
rd place at 11-over-par with a 79-76-155.
Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) is currently one stroke behind Kruse with a 12-over-par, 76-80-156, and is tied with Basalone for 26th overall.
Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) had the biggest improvement of any Pirate competitor on Monday. The freshman shaved eight strokes off her first round score to shoot a 3-over-par, 75, in the second round. Currently, she’s tied for 32nd place at 14-over-par with an 83-75-158.
Seton Hall will be paired with golfers from St. John’s and USF for Tuesday’s third and final round. Tenhundfeld will be the first golfer of the day to tee off at 8:00 am.
