SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men's and women's cross country teams will take part in six regular-season meets as part of the 2013 fall schedule, the program has announced.
The Pirates begin the 2013 campaign locally with the Monmouth XC Kick-Off on August 31, the first of four consecutive Saturdays on which the team will compete to open the new season.
On September 7, SHU will return to Long Island for the Hofstra Brick Stone Run, a race that featured a historic victory from Seton Hall’s Hughnique Rolle a year ago. With her first place individual finish at Hofstra, Rolle became the first Pirate to claim first place since the program transitioned to cross country exclusively.
The next week, September 14, the teams will take to the road again when they travel to Newark, Del. for the Delaware Invitational. Though the Delaware meet features the one course on the new schedule that the Pirates did not tackle in 2012, both squads registered top-five finishes in 2011. Wrapping up the opening stretch is a trip to Princess Anne, Md., where the Pirates will compete at a meet hosted by the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore for the second consecutive season.
Sandwiched in the middle of the season is the prestigious Metropolitan Championship meet where The Hall will square off with the top teams in the area at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. (October 4).
For the eighth time in as many years, the Pirates will close the regular season at the Leopard Invitational, and event hosted by Lafayette College and slated for October 19 in Easton, Pa.
The championship season begins on November 2 at the 2013 BIG EAST Championships. The conference meet will be hosted by Marquette, marking only the second time the championships will be held in the state of Wisconsin and the first since 2009.
The revamped BIG EAST is filled with cross country talent with all 10 institutions competing including two men’s teams and four women’s squads that finished among the top-30 teams in the nation in the final U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll of 2012.
Following a week off after the conference championships, Seton Hall will head to Bethlehem, Pa. for the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on November 15.
Pending performance at the Mid-Atlantic Regional, the Pirates will conclude their season on November 17 at either the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park or the NCAA Championship in Louisville, Ky.
The Seton Hall men’s team will return eight members from a squad that picked up three second place finishes in 2012, led by Ryan Flannery (Forked River, N.J.) and Tyler Orner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) who each placed among the top-five on the team in eight of nine appearances last season.
The SHU women recorded four top-three team performances last fall and will welcome back a slew of accomplished underclassmen to compliment the veteran leadership of Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.) and Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.).
