WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team rallied from an early one-set deficit to earn its first victory of the 2013 season with a 3-2 (18-25, 25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 15-12) win at Army as part of the U.S. Military Academy Tournament on Saturday.
Junior Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.), who has been nursing an injured shoulder, made a triumphant season debut with 11 kills, nine digs and five blocks. Her sister, Shelbey, narrowly missed a triple-double for the second straight day with a team-high 38 assists, 18 digs and eight kills.
Sophomore Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led the Pirates with 12 kills. Classmate Sara Connell (Dousman, Wis.) picked up a career-high 15 digs.
In the opening set, Seton Hall took an early 5-3 lead, but Army scored seven straight points to take a commanding 10-5 lead. The Pirates closed the gap to two points at 19-17, but wouldn't get any closer as the Black Knights took a 1-0 match lead with a convincing 25-18 first set victory.
Seton Hall (1-1) however, came storming back in sets two and three with a pair of easy 25-16 victories. In set two, five straight points, capped by a Stacey Manthorpe kill, turned an early 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 lead. Army rebounded to tie the set at 12, but the Pirates went on a 10-1 run to take a commanding 22-13 lead and rolled to tie the match at 1-1. Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a strong second set with three kills and two blocks. The sophomore finished the match with six kills and a team-high six blocks.
In set three, the Pirates pounced on the Black Knights from the start and never trailed. Stacey Manthorpe's kill mid-way through the set gave Seton Hall a 14-6 lead and Army wouldn't get closer than five points the rest of the set. Sophomore Kayla Kohler (Whitehall, Pa.) led the Pirates in set three with four kills and a block. Kohler finished the match with nine kills and two blocks.
Stacey Manthorpe's block early in set four gave Seton Hall a 5-4 lead, but it was the last lead for the Pirates in the set as Army rallied to tie the match at two sets apiece. The Black Knights led by as many as eight points and cruised to a 25-21 set four victory.
Seton Hall scored seven of the first eight points in set five to take an early 7-1 lead. Army rallied to pull to within 13-11, but the Pirates held off the charging Black Knights to win set five, 15-12, and the match, three sets to two.
Seton Hall will complete play at the U.S. Military Academy Tournament later this afternoon when they face Washington State at 4:30 p.m.
