PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) recorded her second triple-double of the season as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team defeated Princeton, 3-0 (325-15, 25-16, 25-20) on Tuesday.
The victory is the Pirates' second straight overall and second straight against a New Jersey opponent. Last week, the Pirates edged Rutgers in five sets. The win is also Seton Hall's first sweep of the 2013 season.
Manthorpe recorded a rare triple-double in a three-set match. The Pirates' setter finished with team-highs of 12 kills and 23 assists to go with 13 digs. It's her 14th career triple-double. No other player in Seton Hall history has recorded one.
Sophomore Kayla Kohler (Whitehall, Pa.) had a strong match with nine kills and five blocks. Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) provided the defense at the net, combining for 13 total blocks.
Senior Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) flashed her usual defensive brilliance, tallying a team-best 17 digs.
Seton Hall (3-5) took advantage from the start, jumping out to a commanding 15-4 lead to begin set one. With the Pirates up 20-10, Princeton scored four straight, but didn't get any closer as Seton Hall scored five of the last six points of the set to win, 25-15.
The Pirates led early again in set two, scoring four of the first five points. Princeton rebounded however and took their first lead of the match with a 5-1 run, 6-5. With Seton Hall leading 12-10, the Pirates scored the next five points, capped by a Shelbey Manthorpe kill to take a 17-10 lead. Leading 20-15, The Hall closed out the set on a 5-1 run to win, 25-16, and take a two-sets-to-one match advantage.
Princeton (3-4) took an early 4-3 lead in set three, but the Pirates responded with a 6-1 run and a kill by Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) gave Seton Hall a 10-4 lead. Leading 11-6, Seton Hall was aided by three straight Princeton attack errors which gave it its largest lead of the set at 14-6. The Tigers closed to within three points at 19-16, but the Pirates were able to hold on for a 25-20 third set victory.
The Pirates will return to action on Friday, September 20 when they travel to Charlottesville to begin play at the Cavalier Classic. Seton Hall will play three matches over Friday and Saturday and will begin with host Virginia on Friday. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
