VERONA, N.Y. - The Seton Hall men's golf team completed its first tournament of the 2013-14 academic year with an 11th place finish at the 2013 Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate. Junior Derrick Kim (New City, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Sanislo (Whippany, N.J.) led the way for the Pirates at 10-over-par.
Collectively, Seton Hall finished at 54-over-par with a 306-303-309-918. The Pirates ended the tournament seven strokes ahead of their only BIG EAST competitor, Villanova. Host Missouri ran away with the championship, finishing a staggering 22 strokes under par and 27 strokes ahead of second place Cleveland State and McNeese State.
Sanislo, the fifth golfer in the Pirate's lineup, dazzled with a 2-under-par, 70, in the first round. The walk-on was tied for sixth among 75 individual golfers following round one. Sanislo finished with his best collegiate tournament performance at 10-over-par with a 70-77-79-226. Kim used the strength of a an even-par second round to tie Sanislo with a 10-over-par, 78-72-76-226. Both golfers tied for 35th place overall.
The best individual Seton Hall golfer for this tournament was freshman L.J. Go (Guadalupe Cebu City, Philippines), who was competing as an individual. Although his score didn't contribute to the team score, Go excelled with a 1-over-par, 72-75-70-217, to place 14th among 75 individual golfers. Go's 2-under-par, 70, in round three tied Sanislo's first round for the top individual round performance of the tournament for the Pirates.
Sophomore Cory Wilson (Newton, N.J.) saved his best round for Monday and finished the three-round event with a 16-over-par, 77-79-76-232. Seton Hall's Freshman Male Athlete of the Year tied for 51st among all golfers.
JT Harper (Pebble Beach, Calif.) finished three strokes behind Wilson following a 19-over-par, 82-75-78-235.
Freshman Kevin O'Brien (Wexford, Pa.) completed his first collegiate tournament and finished with a 27-over-par, 81-80-82-243, to round out the team scoring.
Seton Hall will return to the links on Sept. 14 for the first two rounds of the 2013 Doc Gimmler, hosted by St. John's at Bethpage Red in Farmingdale, N.Y. It's a tournament the Pirates know well, but recently changed its name from "The McLaughlin."
