SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - For the second consecutive year, the Seton Hall women's soccer team will square off with RV/#22 Georgetown in its regular season finale as the Pirates will host the Hoyas on Friday night in a match with postseason implications.
Seven veteran members of the squad will be honored for their contributions prior to the contest and The Hall (3-9-5, 0-5-3 BIG EAST) will be looking to reprise the Senior Day magic that saw the team score an emphatic 5-0 result over longtime rival Villanova last fall.
On Friday, seniors Rachel Friedman (Bridgewater, N.J.), Mikayla Hickey (Salem, N.H.), Kristin Kosch (Mahwah, N.J.), Kristina Meier (Paramus, N.J.), Peggy Nicolle (Wenonah, N.J.), Angie Shehaj (East Brunswick, N.J.) and graduate student Alyssa Stipcak (Mt. Airy, Md.) will lead a Pirate contingent that is coming off its sixth one-goal loss of the campaign, a 1-0 setback at the hands of St. John's last Sunday.
Despite the defeat, the result marked the 13th time in 17 matches under head coach Rick Stainton that The Hall has surrendered one goal or less.
Both Seton Hall and Georgetown have yielded just 17 goals to the opposition thus far in 2014 and will enter Friday's matchup as the only two BIG EAST squads with a collective goals against average under 1.00 with SHU leading the way at 0.93.
That defense will need to factor prominently yet again against a Hoyas (10-3-4, 5-1-2 BIG EAST) side that joins unbeaten DePaul as the only two in the league averaging at least two goals and two assists per game.
GU opened the conference slate with a tie at DePaul before rattling off four consecutive victories to climb to the top of the table. The Hoyas are just 1-1-1 in their last three outings however and are coming off a draw against Villanova at home that eliminated them from regular season title contention.
GU can still finish as high as second with a win on Friday but a loss could drop them as far as fourth place.
Senior forward Daphne Corboz has once again been one of the most dynamic offensive forces in the nation, ranking fourth in Division I with 16 assists and adding seven goals to total a BIG EAST-best 30 points on the year.
Last season, Corboz tallied the second of the Hoyas' two goals in the opening 10 minutes during what ultimately ended as a 2-0 victory for then-#15 Georgetown over The Hall. The 2014 version of the Hoyas is no stranger to clean sheets either, with four of their five conference wins coming via shutout.
Given Georgetown's reputation as a women's soccer power, The Hall has had an impressive level of success in the series which dates back to the first season of the SHU women's soccer program. The Hoyas have built a slim 10-8-2 advantage with two-straight wins but last time Georgetown visited Owen T. Carroll Field, Pirate standout Taylor Wilson delivered a game-winner in the 96th minute to lift the Pirates to a 3-2 overtime victory.
Start-time for the match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Those wishing to attend Senior Day festivities should aim to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to kick-off. Follow @SHUWSOCCER on Twitter for live updates throughout the action.
