STATE COLLEGE, PA. - Lloyd Jefferson Go (Guadalupe Cebu City, Philippines) led a ferocious charge up the leader board by the Seton Hall men's golf team as the Pirates made up 15 strokes and eight positions in the standings over the final 18 holes to place second at the Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Seton Hall was in 10th place after two rounds, but fired an even-par, 284, in round three to pass eight teams. The Pirates' 284 was the best third round score of any in the 14-team field, including team champion Minnesota. The Golden Gophers finished 12 strokes ahead of the Pirates.
For the three-round event, the Pirates fired a 20-over-par, 295-293-284-872, out-shooting all but one team in a talented field including Maryland, Penn State and former BIG EAST members Connecticut and Rutgers.
The remarkable rookie year of Lloyd Jefferson Go continued this weekend. The freshman finished second among 78 individual golfers with his fourth sub-par tournament of the year. Go registered a 3-under-par, 71-69-70-210 to finish three strokes behind the individual champion, Minnesota's Jose Mendez.
Go's four sub-par tournaments now ties him for third-most in Seton Hall history despite not having yet finished his freshman year. He's tied with newly inducted Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Famer Mike Costigan and trails only Eugene Smith (nine) and Kyle Morris (six).
Go was one of three Pirates to shoot par or better in round three. JT Harper (Pebble Beach, Calif.) fired a team-best 2-under-par, 69, in round three to finish tied for 11th overall. For the three-round event, he was 5-over-par with a 76-73-69-218.
Sophomore Cory Wilson (Newton, N.J.) fired an even-par, 71, in round three. He completed the tournament tied for 16th with a 6-over-par, 74-74-71-219.
Senior Gary Dunne (Wicklow, Ireland) completed his tournament with a 12-over-par, 74-77-74-225, while sophomore David Cha (Carrollton, Texas) finished at 31-over-par with an 86-79-79-244.
Hosted by Penn State University, 14 teams competed on Penn State's Blue Course, a par-71 course measuring 7,202 yards. In addition to Penn State and Seton Hall, participating schools included Minnesota, Xavier, Bowling Green State, Eastern Michigan, Rutgers, Seton Hall, University of Connecticut, Army, Maryland, Binghamton, Youngstown State, La Salle and Wright State.
Seton Hall will complete play for the 2013-14 year with the 2014 BIG EAST Championship, April 27-29, in Okatie, S.C.
