NEW BRITAIN, CONN. – The Seton Hall women’s soccer team opened its 2014 campaign on Thursday, playing to a 1-1 draw with Central Connecticut State in exhibition action from New Britain.
In the exhibition setting, the two teams played three 30-minute periods.
The Pirates controlled much of the possession in their first outing of the new season, generating consistent pressure on the Blue Devils’ goal. In the second period of action, it was freshman Katie Landes (Stony Point, N.Y.) who cashed in one of those chances; opening the scoring and staking The Hall to a 1-0 lead.
With possession up for grabs just under 10 yards outside the Central Connecticut State area, Landes ran onto the loose ball and unleashed a left-footed strike that rattled off the far post before careening into the back of the net.
Seton Hall would remain on top until three minutes before the final horn when the Blue Devils – who advanced to the Northeast Conference semifinals a year ago – eventually equalized to account for the final score line.
Though the teams finished on level terms, first-year head coach Rick Stainton was pleased with the attacking display put forth by the Pirates in their debut outing.
“We did an excellent job of executing the game plan,” said Stainton postgame. “We created the majority of chances. During the preseason, we have been stressing how we would like to build out of the back with composure and purpose and it was good for our team to see that work yield results tonight.”
The Hall has one more exhibition match remaining on the slate before officially kicking-off the 2014 season, returning home to host Wagner on Sunday, August 17 before traveling to Marist for the regular season opener five days later.
Start-time between the Pirates and Seahawks is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday from Owen T. Carroll Field.
