HAMDEN, CONN. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team opened its fall campaign in impressive fashion on Friday at the Quinnipiac Invitational as all seven active team members advanced to at least the quarterfinal round in the opening stages of singles and doubles competition.
On the first day of the three-day event, two rounds were played in each of the two doubles flights while one round of singles was held in the four individual flights.
Juniors Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) and Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) teamed to score two victories in the top doubles flight, advancing to the semifinals in the process.
The two classmates had only played two matches as a tandem prior to the weekend and proceeded to ease past the Connecticut pair of Stosljevic/Walker, 8-1, before outlasting Alana Prinos and Emma Burgess of BIG EAST rival Providence, 8-7 (7) to earn a spot in the final four.
Liljekvist also received a bye into the A flight singles quarterfinals where she was joined by freshman Luize Liva Strike (Riga, Latvia) who downed Prinos by a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 margin in her collegiate debut.
Keenan prevailed in an extended three-set match against Sacred Heart's Sabrina Navarro-Lopez, taking a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 victory to earn a quarterfinal berth in the C flight.
Two Seton Hall freshmen impressed in the B flight as newcomer Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) swept Hartford sophomore Madeline Makings without dropping a game and Marisa Quevedo (Tyler, Texas) topped Navy senior Noelle Kaufmann in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
Junior transfer Isabell Klingert (Baden-Württemberg, Germany) was also triumphant in her Seton Hall debut, blanking Quinnipiac's Nicole Keklik, 6-0, 6-0.
Competition has resumed on Saturday and will continue through the weekend.
