CHICAGO, ILL. - Early miscues on defense proved to be the difference as the Seton Hall University men's soccer team was unable to overcome a first half deficit, falling at DePaul University, 3-1, in its BIG EAST opener on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Kai Greene (South Orange, N.J.) registered the lone score for The Hall with six seconds remaining in regulation, his career-best fourth of the year. Sophomore Samuel Geiler (Offenburg, Germany) assisted the goal for his fourth helper of the season. Geiler played a pass from the middle of the area out to Greene at the near post, who jabbed it in past Mack Robinson.
Seton Hall pressured DePaul for much of the match, including the early moments of the game, but fewer than two minutes in the Blue Demons came down quickly to strike first with Hans Wustling sending a perfect cross into Simon Megally for his fourth goal of the year.
The Pirates ramped up the pressure after the early letdown. Greene had SHU's first shot on net, following shortly by a pair of corner kicks that failed to result in another chance on frame. A third corner in fewer than two minutes eventually resulted in Lukas Pangonis (Kaunas, Lithuania) directed an attempt on net, but Robinson made the save.
A few minutes later DePaul extended the lead to 2-0 as Megally found Alessandro Thomas in the area for a close-range finish past Julian Spindler (Weiersbach, Germany) in the lower right corner. Before the first half was closed, the Blue Demons created a third score with the same players involved in the action.
Megally began the play with a chip past a defender to Wustling on the right side. After settling he dribbled toward the 18 and sent a long pass to Alessandro, who was streaking toward the far post behind the defense for the clear shot.
The second half saw Seton Hall maintain possession for much of the period, but on only a few instances did The Hall get a good look at a goal. In the 84th minute the duo that eventually did post a goal near the end of the match came close to cutting into the DePaul lead with Geiler sending a corner to Greene at the far post, only to see his header miss wide.
Seton Hall continues its four-match road stretch this Tuesday, Sept. 30, as the Pirates step out of conference and head down to Philadelphia, Pa., to face Drexel University. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
