PRINCETON, N.J. - Following an extended stretch during which inclement weather precluded the team from competing, the Seton Hall women's tennis squad returned to action on Saturday, dropping a 6-1 decision to three-time defending America East champions Stony Brook in Princeton.
The Hall (0-2) took the court in a competitive setting for the first time in two weeks after winter weather conditions forced matches against Binghamton and Georgetown to be rescheduled.
Junior Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) returned to action as well after missing the dual match opener at Army; scoring for the Pirates with a victory in the sixth position but it was not enough to overcome a Seawolves (3-0) squad that also owns victories over the Black Knights and Connecticut.
Matched up against Stony Brook senior Cassandra Dix at #6, Klingert took the first set, 6-3. Dix swept the second set in what was one of three singles matches that went the distance on Saturday but Klingert rallied to clinch the point by prevailing, 7-6 (5) in the third.
With the victory, Klingert remained unbeaten thus far this spring having taken home the C flight singles title with three wins at the NJIT Winter Invitational in her only previous appearance of 2015.
For the second-straight outing, freshman Luize Liva Strike (Riga, Latvia) battled back to force a third set after falling in the opening frame in the second position but SBU's Adey Osabouhien came away with the 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 result.
Junior Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) was one set away from adding a victory from the top singles spot but after Liljekvist opened with a 6-4 triumph in set one, Kristina Vozniak took the next two; 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Liljekvist did find success from the #1 doubles position however, teaming with Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) to double up Osabouhien and Louise Badoche, 8-4.
The Seawolves prevailed in the other two doubles matches however to earn the point.
The Pirates will head to Annapolis, Md. next weekend for two matches in two days, taking on Longwood on Friday, February 20 at 6:00 p.m. before going head-to-head with Navy the following morning.
