PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - Sophomore Bryant Cordova (Elizabeth, N.J.) placed 15th overall to lead a group of five Pirates who ranked among the top-25 as the Seton Hall men's cross country team scored a third-place finish at Saturday's 8K Cappy Anderson Invitational.
Cordova picked up his second team-leading performance of the season with a time of 25:48.46 and paced an effort that saw five team members claim a spot in the top-25 for the second week in a row. The sophomore has emerged as a key contributor for The Hall early in the season; recording three top-20 finishes and ranking among the top-three on the squad in each meet.
Junior Sean Kip (Union, N.J.) turned in a time of 26:09.37 to claim 19th-place out of 64 male competitors; matching his performance from last week's Delaware Invitational. Like Cordova, Kip has scored in all three meets for the Pirates and his second-place team finish represents a season-best.
Sophomore Jeff Larson (Yucca Valley, Calif.) followed Kip to the line with a 20th-place time of 26:20.62. Larson now has three top-25 performances to his credit and his finish on Saturday pushes the Pirates' team total to 14 top-20 times over the first three meets of the season.
Finishing fourth for Seton Hall and 24th overall was sophomore Jake Simon (Freehold, N.J.) who returned to the scoring group with a final time of 26:29.76. The finish extended his season-long streak of top-30 times.
Junior Victor Ricci (Narragansett, R.I.), who led the team last week at Delaware, delivered another scoring time to round out the SHU top-five, finishing a stride behind Simon with a 26:30.09 mark. Ricci narrowly missed scoring for The Hall in the season opener but has come in among the top-25 overall each time out this season.
Nearly recording the first scoring times of their respective careers were freshmen Jarod Moser (Duncanville, Texas) and Ricky Stephens (Stony Point, N.Y.) who finished back-to-back in 27th and 28th place. Junior Alex Mallue (Canton, Ohio) added an eighth top-30 time for The Hall by crossing the line in 26:59.33.
The Pirates finished with a cumulative score of 68, just 11 points behind hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore for the runner-up position. Navy took the team title with 15 points.
Both the Seton Hall men's and women's cross country teams will be off from competition next weekend and will return to the course on Friday, October 9 when the Pirates will head to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx for the Metropolitan Championships. Start-time for the men is slated for 2:00 p.m.
