Pirates Fall in Four Sets as St. John's Rallies
10/1/2016 4:50:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
QUEENS, N.Y. – Sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had a team-high 15 kills and the Pirates received strong play from its freshman middle blockers, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team fell in four sets to St. John's, 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 24-26), on Saturday.
Â
The first set was a back-and-forth affair that featured 12 ties and four lead changes. Neither team grabbed a lead of greater than three points. With the score tied at 18, back-to-back kills by Thelen and Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) put the Pirates' in front, 20-18. A kill by freshman Madison Salkowski (Cold Spring, Ky.) clinched the set for The Hall, 25-22. Gasser had six kills in seven attacks in set one alone and the Pirates connected on a .429 attack percentage as a team.
Â
Seton Hall (9-9, 3-2) scored four of the first five points in set two and led for much of the early going. St. John's bounced back though and scored five straight to turn a 10-8 deficit into a 13-10 advantage. Although the set remained close, the Pirates never led again. A kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) cut the St. John's lead to 23-22, but the Red Storm outlasted the Pirates, 25-23.
Â
Turning Point:
Set three was another very closely contested frame. With the score tied at 16, St. John's scored three straight to take a commanding 19-16 lead and force a Seton Hall timeout. The Pirates were pushed to the brink at 24-21, but were able to stave off three set points, and a kill by Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) tied the score at 24. The Red Storm however, regrouped and scored the final two points to win, 26-24, and take a 2-1 match lead. After two sets of posting an attack percentage of at least .400, The Hall's mark dipped to just .128 in set three.
Â
The Pirates began set four on fire, using a 10-3 run to take a commanding 17-8 lead. St. John's bounced back however, with a big run of their own. The Red Storm scored nine of the next 10 points to cut the Seton Hall lead to 18-17. The Pirates led 23-22, but St. John's scored the next two points to enter match point, 24-23. A kill by Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) kept the Pirates alive and tied the score at 24, but the Red Storm scored the final two points of the set to win, 26-24.
