Pirates Fall as De Paul Rallies in Five Sets
10/7/2016 10:08:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) recorded a team-high 16 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team lost to DePaul, 3-2 (25-13, 24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 10-15), on Friday.
Â
Seton Hall (9-10, 3-3) won the first set and led 16-7 in set two, but DePaul rallied to win the second set and claim the match in five sets.Â
Â
The Pirates had arguably their finest set of the season in set one against DePaul. The Hall scored nine of the first 11 points before eventually rolling to a 25-13 victory. Seton Hall had an impressive .577 attack percentage and just one attack error in the convincing win.
Â
Turning Point:
The Pirates burst out of the gate in set two with the same success they saw in set one. The Hall opened the second frame with an 8-2 run. Later in the set, a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) expanded the Seton Hall lead to 16-7 and forced a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons however, didn't fold and responded with a 10-3 run to cut the Pirate lead to 19-18. A kill by DePaul's Caitlin Coffey gave them their first lead of the match, 22-21. The Pirates tied the score three times, but DePaul scored the final two points with the score tied at 24 to tie the match.
Â
Again the Pirates were supremely efficient on their attacks in set three, recording a .458 attack percentage. This set neither team grabbed a lead of greater than three points. A kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) gave The Hall a 24-22 lead, and Thelen ended it two points later with a kill of her own.
Â
Despite the high efficiency for the Pirates in the match, DePaul bounced back with victories in sets four and five for the come-from-behind victory.
