Pirates Fall as De Paul Rallies in Five Sets

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) recorded a team-high 16 kills, but the Seton Hall women's volleyball team lost to DePaul, 3-2 (25-13, 24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 10-15), on Friday.

Seton Hall (9-10, 3-3) won the first set and led 16-7 in set two, but DePaul rallied to win the second set and claim the match in five sets.Â

The Pirates had arguably their finest set of the season in set one against DePaul. The Hall scored nine of the first 11 points before eventually rolling to a 25-13 victory. Seton Hall had an impressive .577 attack percentage and just one attack error in the convincing win.

Turning Point:
The Pirates burst out of the gate in set two with the same success they saw in set one. The Hall opened the second frame with an 8-2 run. Later in the set, a kill by Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) expanded the Seton Hall lead to 16-7 and forced a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons however, didn't fold and responded with a 10-3 run to cut the Pirate lead to 19-18. A kill by DePaul's Caitlin Coffey gave them their first lead of the match, 22-21. The Pirates tied the score three times, but DePaul scored the final two points with the score tied at 24 to tie the match.

Again the Pirates were supremely efficient on their attacks in set three, recording a .458 attack percentage. This set neither team grabbed a lead of greater than three points. A kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) gave The Hall a 24-22 lead, and Thelen ended it two points later with a kill of her own.

Despite the high efficiency for the Pirates in the match, DePaul bounced back with victories in sets four and five for the come-from-behind victory.

Inside the Numbers:
- Thelen had seven kills to go with her 16 kills
- Gasser recorded a career-high 12 kills without an attack error for a team-best .545 attack percentage.
- Schroeder finished with 11 kills and a .364 attack percentage.
- Sophomore Caitlin Koska (Franklin, Wis.) had nine kills and three digs.
- Cherise Hennigan (Corona, Calif.) had 10 kills.
- Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) finished with a team-high 28 assists and seven digs.
- Senior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had a team-high 19 digs.
- Seton Hall's .333 attack percentage vs. DePaul is a season-high.
- The Pirates' 13 reception errors are a season-high.
- Gasser has recorded a new career-high in kills in each of the last three matches.
- Schroeder reached double-figures in kills for the eighth straight match and the 14th time in 19 matches this season.
- Thelen has now had at least 15 kills in a match four times this season, which leads the team.
- The Pirates fall to DePaul for the first time in 15 all-time meetings (1-14).
- Seton Hall falls to 4-2 at Walsh Gym in 2016.
- Seton Hall drops to 2-2 in five-set matches this season.
The Pirates will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, October 8) when they host BIG EAST rival Marquette. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
