OVERLAND PARK, KAN. – Senior Tessa Fournier (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was one of only 30 student-athletes nationwide to be named a candidate for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate volleyball on Thursday.
Â
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.  An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Â
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
Â
A three-time AVCA All-Region honoree, Fournier was named BIG EAST Libero of the Year for a second consecutive season in 2015, and led the BIG EAST in both digs (583) and digs per set (5.16). In conference games only, she was even more impressive with a digs per set average of 5.57. Named to Louisville's Active Ankle Challenge All-Tournament Team, Fournier recorded at least 20 digs in a single-match 14 times last season, including a season-high 29 digs vs. St. John's.Â
Â
This season, Fournier is again leading the BIG EAST Conference in digs per set. Her 25 digs vs. Marquette on Oct. 8 are the most by any BIG EAST player in a four-set match this season, and her 33 digs vs. Butler are the most in a five-set match. Fournier was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and to the Seton Hall Classic All-Tournament Team.
Â
A Public Relations major, Fournier is a three-time Academic All-BIG EAST selection and has earned Dean's List recognition three times as well. A team captain, she is highly active on campus and in the community and most recently, has been putting her efforts into organizing a soccer tournament with Spectrum Works – an organization that works in training adults with autism so that they can find employment.
