Mason, Pirates Earn Crucial Road Win at DePaul
11/13/2016 3:55:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
CHICAGO, ILL. – Junior Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) recorded her first career double-double, highlighted by a career-high 25 kills, as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team downed DePaul, 3-1 (28-26, 21-25, 27-25, 25-17), on Sunday.
The victory, coupled with Villanova's loss to Butler today, inches Seton Hall closer to a BIG EAST Tournament berth. A Seton Hall win in its regular season finale against St. John's on Nov. 19, coupled with a Villanova loss in either of its final two matches against Creighton or Providence, would clinch a berth for The Hall.
The first set was an epic battle featuring two teams refusing to relent. The teams combined for four lead changes and 18 ties in a set that went well beyond 25 points. A kill by Haylee Gasser (Mission Viejo, Calif.) put Seton Hall in set point, 24-21, but DePaul roared back with three straight points to tie the set at 24. The Blue Demons staved off two more set points, before a block by Gasser and Danielle Schroeder (Chicago, Ill.) put the Pirates over the top, 28-26.
DePaul bounced back in set two, and scored five of the first seven points to take an early advantage. A kill by Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) tied the set at 13, but the Pirates couldn't pull ahead. The Blue Demons never led by more than four points throughout the set, but was able to maintain a slim lead and defeated The Hall, 25-21, to tie the match.
Turning Point:
Seton Hall (15-15, 9-8) led by as many as five early in set three, but DePaul rebounded and cut the Pirate lead to one, 17-16. With the score tied at 23, a kill by Schroeder put The Hall in set point, but the Blue Demons were able to tie the score at 24. Again, the Pirates pushed DePaul to the brink on an attack error, 25-24, but again the Blue Demons bounced back to tie it at 25. Gasser's kill gave The Hall a third set point in set four, but this time a kill by Mason ended the set in Seton Hall's favor, 27-25.
Riding the momentum of a set three victory, the Pirates never trailed in set four. Mason's fifth kill of the set extended The Hall's lead to 12-6. DePaul cut Seton Hall's lead to four points on three separate occasions, but couldn't get closer. A pair of kills by Gasser to conclude the match, won set four for The Hall, 25-17. The Pirates had a match-high .444 attack percentage in the defining set.
