SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall women's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a big 71-66 victory over Boston College (1-2) on Thursday night at Walsh Gymnasium. Prior to the contest, The Hall raised a banner to commemorate their 2016 NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Pirates got a game-high 17 points from both Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Claire Lundberg (Andover, Minn.) in the triumph, with both setting new career-highs. Hilaire dished out a game-best eight assists and snatched four steals, while Lundberg tied for the game-high with eight rebounds. Deja Winters (Richmond Heights, Ohio) was the third Pirate in double figures, pouring in a career-high 16 points along with six rebounds and three steals.
The Pirates railed from a halftime deficit for the second-straight contest, falling behind by three at the break and as many as nine in the third quarter. Overall in the second half The Hall out-scored BC 34-26, with Lundberg leading the way with 11 in the third and fourth quarters.
Turning Point
Boston College led 40-37 at halftime, and came out strong in the fourth quarter by rattling off the first six points to stretch their lead to nine. The Pirates answered emphatically with an 8-0 run thanks to 3-pointers from Lundberg and Kaity Healy (Freehold, N.J.) before a Winters lay-in. The Hall would pull even for the first time in the second half with 5:24 remaining in the third when Lundberg drilled another triple to level the score at 48-48.
The Hall was able to stretch its lead to as many as seven early in the fourth, but BC rallied back to tie the contest at 65 with 3:09 to play in regulation. Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) answered for the Pirates with a lay-in before sinking a pair of free throws in the final 90 seconds to make it 69-65. The Eagles pulled back within in a possession with 12 seconds to play, but Hilaire came up with a huge steal before sinking two from the line to ice the win.
