Pirates Topple No. 16 South Carolina at MSG
12/13/2016 1:24:00 AM | Men's Basketball
NEW YORK - In a tie game with less than 15 seconds remaining in the game, junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) crossed over his defender, drove baseline and connected on a game-winning layup as the Seton Hall men's basketball team continued its hot streak over nationally ranked teams with a 67-64 victory over No. 16 and previously unbeaten South Carolina Monday night at the first Under Armour Reunion at Madison Square Garden.
With the victory, the Pirates (8-2) now have won four consecutive games against Associated Press ranked teams and five in a row over teams ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Hall handed the Gamecocks their first defeat of the year as South Carolina had been one of seven remaining unbeaten teams in Div. I. It was also Seton Hall's first win over an AP ranked team during the non-conference season since Dec. 20, 2008 vs. Southern California.
Rodriguez finished the game with 16 points and went 5-for-9 from the field. Junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points, making nine of 10 free throw attempts. The Pirates as a team shot 72 percent from the charity stripe, going 26-for-36. Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) recorded his fourth consecutive double-double and sixth of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
South Carolina (8-1) was paced by P.J. Dozier, who had 20 points.
Turning Point
The Pirates rebounded from a turnover-plagued first half that resulted in a seven-point, halftime deficit, 34-27. Freshman Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) completed the first comeback with a three-point play at 12:23 of the second half to put The Hall on top 49-48.
It was a back and forth slugfest from there with neither team taking more than a three-point lead until a 5-0 Pirates run led by four points from Carrington put them up 64-60 with 1:49 to go.
South Carolina fought back with a jumper from Maik Kotsar and free throws from Justin McKie to make it 64-64 with 34 seconds to play.
That set the stage for the final possession. After calling a timeout, the Pirates in-bounded and set it up for Rodriguez, who dribbled and crossed over his defender to gain a path to the basket and finished with a two-handed layup to put the Pirates on top 64-66.
Dozier tried to win it for the Gamecocks, but his three-pointer hit rim. A foul sent Powell to the free throw line, and he made the first but missed the second. With 0.4 seconds left, Dozier's desperation three actually rimmed out and the Pirates celebrated another victory over a nationally ranked program.
Inside the Numbers
- Both teams shot under 40 percent for the game as the Pirates were 19-for-55 (34.5 percent) and the Gamecocks were 22-for-57 (38.6 percent).
- Struggling all season with free throws, the Pirates stepped up and made big ones all night. They finished 26-for-36 from the stripe (72.2 percent). South Carolina was 15-for-25 (60 percent).
- The Pirates out-rebounded the Gamecocks, 49-35, and used 18 offensive rebounds to generate 15 second chance points.
- It was a tale of two halves as the Pirates turned the ball over 13 times in the first half, but only four times in the second half. In spite of Seton Hall turning it over 17 times in the game, South Carolina only scored 19 points off the turnovers.
- Carrington posted his fifth 20-point game of the season by scored 21 points. Though he struggled from the field, shooting 5-for-18, he was sharp from the free throw line, making nine of 10.
- Rodriguez was 5-for-9 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line to account for his 16-point night. He now has recorded 15 points or more in five games this season.
- Delgado continues to dominate with his fourth consecutive double-double and sixth of the season with his 13 points and 12 rebounds. It was his 29th career double-double, and the Pirates are now 25-4 when he double dips.
- Junior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.) continued his strong defensive effort and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.
- Powell finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
- The game featured 13 ties and 16 lead changes.
