Pirates Leap Past Blue Hens, 81-68

NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Angel Delgado (Bajos de Haina, Dominican Republic) posted his fifth consecutive double-double, tied a career-best 22 points, and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Seton Hall men's basketball team soared to its fifth-straight victory with an 81-68 win over visiting Delaware on Saturday night in a non-conference matchup at Prudential Center.
Senior Madison Jones (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a career-best 15 points while picking up four assists and four steals without committing a turnover. Junior Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied 12 points including a sensational dunk in the second half, and junior Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 10 points and four assists.
For Delaware, Anthony Mosley scored a team-high 21 points and shot 13-of-14 from the free-throw line. Ryan Daly finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.
TURNING POINT
Seton Hall never trailed in this game, leading from the get-go, but the Blue Hens cut the lead to seven, 60-53, with 6:45 to play in the second half with layup from Daly.
The Pirates then scored four straight points to push the lead to 11 at 5:54. The teams traded buckets until Carrington hit a three and Delgado hit a pair of three throws to make it a 14-point lead, 73-59, with 3:26 to go.
Following a Delaware layup, the Pirates then held the ball for a span of 81 seconds, from the 3:15 mark down to 1:44, following three long possessions with three offensive rebounds. The final possession was capped with a dunk from junior Ismael Sanogo (Newark, N.J.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Delgado, who notched his seventh double-double of the season and 30th of his career, shot 9-for-12 (75.0 percent) from the field and dished out three assists without committing a turnover.
- Sanogo totaled seven points and eight rebounds on 3-of-4 shooting.
- The Hall dominated play down low once again and outscored the Blue Hens 44-28 in the paint.
- The Pirates held advantages in second-chance points (17-3), offensive rebounds (17-7) and total rebounds (43-35).
- Capitalizing on Delaware mistakes, SHU held a 14-7 edge in points off turnovers and a 12-4 advantage in fast-break points.
- The teams shot a combined 3-for-15 (20.0 percent) from beyond the arc in the first half, but the Pirates went 5-for-11 (45.5 percent) over the final 20 minutes to finish 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) for the game compared to just 4-of-16 (25.0 percent) overall for the Blue Hens.
- Delaware held a decisive advantage on the free-throw line, shooting 20-of-22 (90.9 percent), compared to just 10-of-20 for The Hall.
- As a team, SHU finished with 14 assists and a season-low eight turnovers. It was the fourth time this season the Pirates finished with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio.
- SHU improves to 43-4 (.915) in non-conference home games under head coach Kevin Willard.
- The Hall has now played in 80 consecutive regular season non-conference games without losing two in a row, a streak that dates back to Willard's debut season in 2010.
- SHU is now on a 19-game non-league winning streak on its home court.
- The Pirates have won 20 straight when Delgado records a double-double and are 26-4 all-time when he double dips.
- For the season, SHU is outscoring opponents in the paint 398-252, an average of +13.3 per game.
- The Hall now leads the all-time series with Delaware, 4-0. The previous meeting between the teams was a 75-70 victory for the Pirates at home on Nov. 29, 2008.
- The Pirates limited Delaware to 22 field goals, tied with three other teams this season for a season low versus The Hall.
- This is fourth time in Willard's seven seasons that the team has been 9-2 or better through the first 11 games, including each of the last three.
