Pirates Take Down St. John's In BIG EAST Opener
12/30/2016 10:34:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – In a back-and-forth thriller on Friday night, the Seton Hall women's basketball team (8-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) took down St. John's (8-4, 1-0) by a score of 64-59 inside a raucous Walsh Gymnasium. The contest served as the BIG EAST opener for both teams, as The Hall improves to 3-1 in conference lid-lifters under fourth-year head coach Anthony Bozzella.
In a contest that featured both 11 ties and 11 lead changes, JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) battled foul trouble to lead three Pirates in double-figures with a team-high 18 points. Also in double-digits for The Hall were Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Deja Winters (Richmond Heights, Ohio) who each finished with 10.
The Pirates and Red Storm went to the halftime break knotted at 31-all, with The Hall pulling ahead by a single point heading to the fourth quarter. Neither squad held a lead bigger than seven points throughout the contest.
Turning Points
Midway through the fourth quarter, The Hall appeared poised to break the game open when it stretched the lead to seven. Claire Lundberg (Andover, Minn.) knocked down a 3-pointer and was fouled in the act, converting the four-point play to give The Hall a 55-48 lead with 5:16 to play. The Red Storm would answer quickly, rattling off five in a row to get back within three before a Jackson lay-in.
The Hall led by five with 3:41 to play, but a 7-0 run from St. John's gave the Red Storm a 59-57 advantage with under two minutes to play. The Hall answered quickly, as Gordon scored off a game-high seventh assist from Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) to tie the contest right back-up with 1:37 to play.
On St. John's' next possession, Winters came up with a steal near the sideline and sent a pass ahead to LaTecia Smith (Gardena, Calif.) for a go-ahead lay-in with 1:08 to play. Smith would cap the game in the final seconds, snagging another steal after a missed free throw and burying two from the line to build the final five-point edge.
