NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J. - Led by senior Hannah Liljekvist (Djursholm, Sweden) who remained undefeated in both doubles and singles play with another perfect afternoon, the Seton Hall tennis team got back in the win column by sweeping every contested point in a 6-1 victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.
The Hall (4-2) has now won four of its last five outings and only came up short of its second shutout in the last three due to a walkover for the Bobcats in the sixth singles match.
With a win from the top doubles spot alongside Luize Strike (Riga, Latvia) and another singles victory in the second spot, Liljekvist improved to 6-0 both as part of the Pirates' top tandem and an individual.
Strike and senior Isabell Klingert (Oberbalbach, Germany) also finished the day with a doubles and singles victory to their credit as SHU took two of three doubles matches prior to the start of singles action.
Once head-to-head matches began, Seton Hall dropped just one set in the five matches that were held and the team has now yielded a total of three sets in singles competition across its last three victories.
Strike moved to 5-1 overall from atop the singles lineup with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 performance against Sophia Dzulynsky. The sophomore's last four wins have come in straight sets and she has surrendered more than two games in a set just once during the stretch.
Liljekvist was equally dominant at No. 2, doubling up Rachel Horton twice en route to a comfortable 6-3, 6-3 result. The two-time All-Conference honoree has played up to that billing early in her senior campaign, rattling off six consecutive straight-set victories with only one match going as far as a second set tiebreak.
Klingert topped Jennifer Lu in third singles by an identical 6-3, 6-3 score to record her third-straight win and level her spring record through six appearances. The senior is 3-2 as No. 3 in the lineup after leading the Pirates in victories last spring.
Freshman Katie Kim (Honolulu, Hawaii) grinded out a comeback victory in three sets in a fourth singles matchup with Sitilia Rencheli, battling back from a first set defeat. Rencheli claimed the opening frame, 6-2, but Kim stormed back to take the next two, 6-2, 10-8 and move to 3-3 during the spring season as well.
Senior Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) improved to 5-1 as an individual this spring with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Proyfon Lohaphaisan at No. 5 and has now needed the minimum number of sets in all five of her scoring efforts to this point in the season.
Liljekvist and Strike got past Horton and Lohaphaisan, 6-4 to keep their unbeaten run going in doubles play while Klingert teamed with Thandy Kangwa (Fort Myers, Fla.) to Jennifer Lu and Sydney Young, 6-2, at No. 3.
The Pirates will head to Florida to play three matches in as many days over spring break, beginning with a road match at the University of Tampa on Tuesday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m.
