Hilaire's Winner Powers The Hall Past Butler
1/29/2017 6:07:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) banked home a floater with 1.9 seconds to play to lift the Seton Hall women's basketball team to a 65-63 victory over Butler on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. The game-winner helped The Hall (11-11, 4-7 BIG EAST) cap a season-long four-game homestand with a 3-1 record, including a sweep this weekend.
In front of a near-capacity crowd of 1,467 as part of the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the Pirates led by as many as 11 in the third quarter before a late Butler (5-17, 2-9 BIG EAST) rally saw the contest tied in the final moments. The comeback for BU came after The Hall led for over 38 minutes of game action.
JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) led the Pirates with 13 points and LaTecia Smith (Gardena, Calif.) stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, five assists, five steals and five rebounds. For the Bulldogs it was Michelle Weaver with 25 and Tori Schickel adding 16 and 11 boards. Martha Kuderer (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was the third Pirate in double-figures with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting off the bench.
Head Coach Anthony Bozzella on the result
"The girls came out with great energy, especially after a tough game on Friday. I was really proud of two players in particular; KK [Hilaire] having the confidence to take and make that shot at the end and Martha [Kuderer], coming in off the bench and having a huge impact."
Turning Point
The Hall led by as many as 11 in the third quarter, before Butler battled back to within a possession at 59-56 with 5:12 to play. Buckets from Jackson and Smith stretched the lead back to seven at 63-56 with 2:50 to play, but again Butler surged back and reeled off a 7-0 run capped by a game-tying lay-in from Weaver with 29.1 to play.
After a Seton Hall timeout, Butler gave a foul that led to an inbounds with 9.4 to play. Hilaire took the inbound feed in the backcourt and drove left, slicing into the lane and floating up the eventual game-winner. Butler had a look at a 3-pointer in the dying seconds of regulation, but the long heave was off target and The Hall held on for the two-point win.
