Sager, Kness, Pirates Lead After Round One at Brown
10/16/2017 9:17:00 AM | Women's Golf
SEEKONK, MASS. – Sophomore Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) and freshman Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) are tied for the individual lead and have led the Seton Hall women's golf team to a 10-stroke team lead at the 2017 Brown Bear Fall Invitational with one round remaining.
Sager was brilliant in round one on Sunday, using four birdies to power her way to a 1-under-par, 70. It's her third sub-par round of the fall and the fifth of her collegiate career. Kness was equally sharp in round one, and had only one hole above par in route to her 1-under-par, 70. Kness' first round performance is a career-best. Neither Sager nor Kness have collected an individual title yet in their young collegiate careers.
Collectively, Seton Hall dominated on Sunday, shooting an even-par, 284, to carry a 10-stroke lead over second-place Quinnipiac into the clubhouse with 18 holes remaining. The Hall's 284 breaks the program's single-round record for a par-71 course by six strokes. The Pirates are seeking their first team tournament victory since winning the William & Mary Invitational to begin the fall season last year.
Senior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) and sophomore Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) also turned in marquee performances and are tied for eighth place overall after shooting a 1-over-par, 72. The single-hole highlight of the day for the Pirates was an eagle for Pantelas on the par-5, seventh hole. Staudt, the reigning BIG EAST Women's Golfer of the Week, started her round with eight straight pars, bogeyed three of the next four holes, but then shot 2-under-par over the final six holes.
Seton Hall counts only the top four individual scores for the team score, but if the Pirates needed all five, they'd still be in first place by a large margin. Sophomore Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) also turned in a strong effort on Monday, shooting a 2-over-par, 73. Her round was bolstered by a strong 2-under-par performance on the front nine.
For a second straight tournament, the Pirates competed with their entire roster. Three Seton Hall golfers competed as individuals, Gianna Tomeo (Bradenton, Fla.), Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) and Jamie Greene (Troy, Mich.).
Tomeo shot an 11-over-par, 82, Fouse had a 12-over-par, 83, and Greene check in with a 20-over-par, 91.
