LAST WEEKEND
Last weekend, Seton Hall swept St. John's at Walsh Gym to close out the first half of the BIG EAST portion of their schedule with a 6-3 record. Junior Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had a match-high 15 kills, only three attack errors and a .444 attack percentage. Senior Dominique Mason (Chicago, Ill.) tallied a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
Â
For their efforts against St. John's and Villanova last week, Mason and Thelen were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Tuesday.
Â
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Seton Hall and Providence will meet for the 30th time in history on Friday. The Friars have a slim lead on the rivalry, winning 15 of the prior 29 meetings, but the Pirates have won nine of the last 10 matches, including a contest at Walsh Gym earlier this season.Â
Â
On Sept. 30, Seton Hall swept the Friars in South Orange (25-22, 25-23, 25-14). Mason collected a double-double in only three sets with match-highs of 12 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) also had a double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs. Thelen also reached double-figures with 10 kills.
Â
Providence enters the weekend with an impressive 15-8 overall record and a 4-4 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. They are coming off a split of a pair of home matches last weekend, defeating Xavier in four sets on Friday before being swept by Butler on Sunday. The Pirates defeated the Friars earlier this year, but now they head to Rhode Island where Providence is 8-1 at home this season. PC has already defeated Villanova, Georgetown and Xavier at Alumni Hall in 2017.
Â
SCOUTING CREIGHTON
Seton Hall and Creighton will meet for the 12th time in history on Sunday. The Bluejays have won eight of the prior 11 meetings, including seven straight. Earlier this season, the Pirates fell in straight sets.
Â
On Sept. 29 in Walsh Gym, the Pirates put up a strong effort in the first set, before falling, 26-24. They went on to drop the next two, 25-12 and 25-21. Mason had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs. Senior Sarah Kenneweg (Poolesville, Md.) had a match-high 15 digs. Junior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) had 22 assists and eight digs.
Â
Creighton enters the weekend as the nation's No. 16 ranked team with an overall record of 14-5 and a 7-1 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Bluejays have won three straight, including a five-set win over Butler, and a straight set victory over Xavier, last weekend. Creighton's only loss in BIG EAST play came in three sets in Milwaukee against undefeated Marquette. The Bluejays are a perfect 4-0 at D.J. Sokol Arena in BIG EAST play and are 6-1 at home overall with their only loss coming to No. 18 USC.
