LAST WEEKEND
The Pirates returned home last weekend and split a pair of BIG EAST Conference matches at Walsh Gym. On Friday, The Hall put forth a strong effort, but fell in three sets against No. 14 Creighton. Mason notched a double-double with a team-high 10 kills and a career-high 13 digs. Junior Sophia Coffey (Sierra Madre, Calif.) narrowly missed a double-double with 22 assists and eight digs. On Saturday, Seton Hall bounced back with a straight sets victory over Providence. The win was the 100th in the coaching career of head coach Allison Yaeger. Mason and Maggie Cvelbar (Euclid, Ohio) registered double-doubles.
Â
For her efforts, Mason was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for a second straight week.
Â
SCOUTING XAVIER
Seton Hall and Xavier will meet for only the ninth time in history on Friday. The Musketeers have dominated the all-time series, having won six of the prior eight meetings.Â
Â
Last season, the teams split the home-and-home series with each team winning at home. On Sept. 24, Seton Hall defeated Xavier in four sets at Walsh Gym. Thelen erupted for a match-high 17 kills to go with seven digs. Coffey was just one dig shy of a double-double with 28 assists and nine digs. Cvelbar was only two digs shy. On Oct. 21, the Musketeers defeated the Pirates in Cincinnati in four sets. Again, it was Thelen who had a big effort, logging a match-high 20 kills to go with eight digs and three blocks. Mason added 15 kills.
Â
Xavier enters Friday's contest with a record of 7-11 overall and 2-3 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Musketeers are coming off a split of two road conference matches last weekend. ON Friday, Xavier was swept at Villanova, but it bounced back to defeat Georgetown in D.C. in four sets on Saturday. The Pirates and Musketeers had one common opponent in the non-conference portion of their schedule. Xavier lost to Cincinnati in five sets earlier this season, while the Pirates defeated the Bearcats in four sets. Other BIG EAST results for Xavier include a five-set win over DePaul and four-set losses to Butler and Marquette.
