DADE CITY, FLA. – The Seton Hall men's golf team edged Miami (Ohio) in a tie-breaker in the semifinal round of the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play event at Lake Jovita Country Club on Monday and will now play for the championship on Tuesday.Â
Â
Each team won three matches, but the Pirates won the tie-breaker by virtue of having the largest margin of victory in their three wins. The Hall will now face No. 2 seed Notre Dame for the title of the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play event on Tuesday. The Fighting Irish defeated Ball State in the semifinals, 4-to-2.
Â
For a second straight match, the Pirates received strong play from Lloyd Jefferson Go (Guadalupe Cebu City, Philippines), Kevin O'Brien (Wexford, Pa.) and Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland), all of which defeated their Miami opponents by at least three holes.
Â
Go never trailed Miami's Patrick Flavin, winning the first hole and cruising to a 4 & 3 victory. Leading by two holes, Go lost No. 11, but bounced back to win holes 14 and 15 to clinch the win. Go is now 4-0 all-time at this event.
Â
O'Brien also won his first hole and never trailed. Leading by two holes, he won three straight to complete his round and down Miami's J.D. Fletcher, 5 & 3.
Â
All square through seven holes, Chalk made his move by winning holes 11 and 12. After giving a hole back on No. 13, he won three straight to take a commanding four-hole lead. Chalk went on to defeat Miami's Callahan Elzey, 3 & 2.
Â
Sophomores Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) and Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) both played the full 18 holes against their Miami opponents, but ended up on the short side of the score. Nagai fell to Brian Ohr, 1UP, while Yeom dropped his match to Greg Conrad, 2UP.Â
Â
Junior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) fell to Miami's Cam Solomon, 3 & 2.
