Jackson Pours In 32 In Battle at St. John's
2/26/2017 4:36:00 PM | Women's Basketball
QUEENS, N.Y. – JaQuan Jackson (Killen, Texas) poured in a career-high 32 points in a hard-fought 77-71 setback for the Seton Hall women's basketball team (11-18, 4-14 BIG EAST) at St. John's (19-10, 11-7 BIG EAST) on Sunday at Carnesecca Arena. The setback, which served as the regular season finale for both clubs, locks The Hall into the No. 8 seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep.
In a contest that featured nine ties and 20 lead changes, The Hall trailed by one at the half and pulled even in the final portion of the fourth quarter before the eventual setback. Jackson's 32-point effort marked the highest scoring output for a Pirate this season, as the junior shot 12-of-22 from the floor and knocked down 6-of-10 from 3-point range.
In support of Jackson, LaTecia Smith (Gardena, Calif.) scored 13 points and notched three steals while Kaela HIlaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) added eight points and six assists. As a team the Pirates shot 50.0 percent, tied for their best mark of the season and best in conference play. Alisha Kebbe led four Red Storm players in double-figures with 17 points.
Turning Point
Down three going into the fourth quarter, the Pirates battled back and leveled the contest at 66-all with a three-point play from Jackson at the 3:26 mark of the final frame. The Red Storm found an answer, with a 3-pointer from Kebbe sparking a 6-0 run that pushed St. John's back ahead. The Hall pulled within two with a Hilaire lay-in with 41 ticks remaining but would get no closer.
Inside The Numbers
- Both teams shot it well, with St. John's recording a 56.3 percent mark from the floor compared to The Hall's 50.0 percent mark
- From 3-point range the Pirates hit at a 58.8 percent clip and held the Red Storm to 37.5 percent
- The Hall used 10 steals to force 17 St. John's turnovers, out-scoring the Red Storm 19-8 off turnovers
- Smith and Shadeen Samuels (Ossining, N.Y.) each recorded three steals, while Hilaire added two
- St. John's held a 32-20 edge on the glass and a slight 26-22 advantage in points in the paint
- Jackson's 30-point effort was the first for a Pirate since Tabatha Richardson-Smith scored 34, also at St. John's, on Jan. 9, 2016
- Smith knocked down a career-high three 3-pointers
- Jackson notched her sixth 20-point outing of the season and second in as many games
- Claire Lundberg (Andover, Minn.) has hit at least one 3-pointer in 25-of-29 games this season
- The Hall falls to 29-44 all-time against St. John's splitting the regular season series for the second time in three years
The Pirates will open play at the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday, March 4 for a First Round match-up at Marquette's Al McGuire Center. Tip-off for No. 8 Seton Hall against No. 9 Providence is set for 7:30 p.m. (ET) on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
