Pirates Open BIG EAST Tournament With Win Over PC
3/4/2017 11:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The No. 8 seed Seton Hall women's basketball team (12-18) advanced to the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep with a 73-60 victory over nine-seed Providence (12-18) on Saturday night at the Al McGuire Center. Guards Kaela Hilaire (Floral Park, N.Y.) and JaQuan Jackson (Killeen, Texas) combined for 35 points to power The Hall to the victory and a date with top-seed DePaul on Sunday evening.
The Pirates led wire-to-wire in their third meeting of the season with Providence, going up five at the half and out-scoring PC in all four quarters. The Hall shot a season-best 51.0 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Friars 39-22, marking its best rebounding margin of the season.
Head Coach Anthony Bozzella on the win
"I am very proud of our girls. We've obviously struggled recently, but we've actually had two real good weeks. I didn't know how well we would play because a lot of our girls have never played in a Big East playoff game before, and they came through, and I'm proud of them."
Turning Points
The Hall led by six after a quarter, and in the second quarter reeled off a 7-0 run to stretch a four-point edge to a 27-16 lead with 6:05 to play and force a PC timeout. That run helped the Pirates take a 37-30 lead to the break, which was pushed back to double-digits with a Jackson 3-pointer to open the third quarter.
The Friars fought back in the third and pulled within a possession at 44-41 with 4:10 to play. The Hall once again responded with a 7-0 spurt that featured a Jackson 3-pointer and a an offensive put-back from Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) to go up 51-41 late in the third. That lead was able to hold, as PC could not pull within a single possession the rest of the way.
