HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) shot a team-best 5-over-par, 77, in Sunday's final round to finish second overall and lift the Pirates to a third place team finish at the Low Country Intercollegiate.
Staudt turned in a career-best performance with an 11-over-par, 78-77-155, to place second among 95 individual golfers. She finished just five strokes behind the individual champion, Presbyterian's Celia Mansour. It is Staudt's first career top-10 and top-5 finish.
Collectively, Seton Hall placed third with a 68-over-par, 320-324-644. The Pirates finished only six strokes behind the team champion, High Point, and only three strokes behind second-place Gardner-Webb.
No other BIG EAST schools are in the field, but the Pirates played this event in Hilton Head to accustom themselves to the climate and style of course in preparation for the BIG EAST Championship. The conference's marquee event will be played at nearby Callawassie Island next month.
A trio of Pirates finished tied for 27th at 19-over-par. Freshman Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) shaved a stroke off her first round score to finish with an 82-81-163. Junior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) finished with an 81-82-163, while Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) recorded a 79-84-163.
Rounding out the team scoring, freshman Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) finished with a 22-over-par, 82-84-166.
Tournament Details:
LOW COUNTRY INTERCOLLEGIATE
Host: Wofford College
Location: Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Course: Moss Creek Golf Club (South Course)
Course Vitals: Par-72, 5,922 yards
Dates: March 18-19, 2017, Two Rounds
The Course:
Golf at Moss Creek is some of the finest in all of the Low Country, with its two championship courses, Devils Elbow South and Devils Elbow North. Both courses were Fazio-designed more than 30 years ago, with the intention of making the game challenging for the low handicap golfers, as well as fair and playable to the higher handicap golfers.
Both of these courses are truly hidden treasurers. There is a real beauty to each of them as you ride or walk down the fairways. Each course is lined with magnificent oak trees and tall airy pines, with strategically-placed sand traps, large ponds and water tributaries, and last but not least are the salt marshes which change twice daily with the tides. All this beauty, and there is still more! While you are playing your round of golf you may see alligators sunning on the banks, or you might spot an egret or hawk, or even an eagle swooping down to snatch a fish out of one of the many ponds, and on occasion you could see a family of wild turkeys scampering across a fairway trying to avoid a barrage of tee shots coming down on them.
For the purposes of the Low Country Intercollegiate, the golf course will play a par of 72 over 5,922 yards.
The Field:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Wofford College, the large field included 15 other schools, Appalachian State, Bethune Cookman, Bucknell, The Citadel, Dalton State, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Longwood, Navy, Presbyterian, Quinnipiac, SCAD Savannah, USC Beauford and USC Upstate.
Up Next:
Seton Hall will return to the links for the first two of three rounds at the Hoya Invitational on Monday, April 10.
