SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall men's soccer team battled Saint Peter's to a 1-1 draw in double overtime on Friday night in front of 1,211 fans at Owen T. Carroll Field. The contest served as the regular season opener for both the Pirates and the Peacocks.
Andres Arcila (Cartagena, Colombia) scored for the Pirates and Steven Catudal (Sacramento, Calif.) made seven saves in goal during his Seton Hall debut. In an extremely physical contest the two sides combined for 38 fouls and eight cautions, including a pair of red cards. Both sides played a man down for the final 84:37 of regulation and extra time.
Saint Peter's nearly struck in the game's opening minutes when a foul in the box during a corner kick attempt led to penalty kick, but Catudal guessed right to make a diving stop on the attempt in the second minute. The Pirates had a man advantage beginning with an SPU red card in the 13th minute and nearly capitalized immediately on a Gabriel Viola (Sao Paulo, Brazil) free kick that went just wide.
After a red card on The Hall in the 36th minute, the Peacocks struck first with a 39th minute tally. The Pirates equalized seconds before the break, with Arcila bending home a free kick in the 45th minute to level the score. Both sides had several opportunities playing with 10 men in the second half and overtime, but Catudal and SPU keeper Robbie Anderson kept the contest deadlocked.
